Friends of Highfield Community Orchard

In 2010, after a campaign and petition, local people planted the first fruit trees on a small disused school playground owned by Kirklees Council, located at the bottom of Mountjoy Road, HD1 5PX. It is now identified as Community Green Space in the Kirklees Local Plan. The Friends of Highfields Community Orchard maintains the orchard as a space for nature and community use, and organises events to encourage local people to use it and to harvest the fruit and nuts that grow there.
