Spen Valley Civic Society
Our society exists to improve the built and natural environment in Spen Valley, and to help people learn about and appreciate local heritage.
We’ve intervened on planning issues, campaigned for brownfield regeneration, planted thousands of trees, created the Jo Cox Community Wood and Sparrow Park Liversedge with its striking Luddite statue, the only one in the UK. We devised a Luddite Trail & a Spen Valley Fame Trail. We’ve installed information boards about eg. Cleckheaton’s Prowling Panthers, and the history of Roberttown. We worked with Wetherspoons to provide the extensive local heritage pictures & information in the Obadiah Brooke pub, Cleckheaton.
