As a primary school, we promote and teach (through a variety of subjects) all our pupils the importance of caring for their local environment and playing their part in helping to save our planet through depositing our rubbish, recycling, reusing etc. Therefore our school council recently signed up to the spring clean project to ensure our large school grounds (which include playgrounds, sports fields and woodland) are clean and free of rubbish with regular timetabled litter picks.

The MAST Community Garden

The MAST Community garden was launched last year via Skelmanthorpe Family Doctors, this year we'd like to pass the garden to our local community. This year we have established a community steering group for the garden. Members include service users of social prescribing, local libraries, the U3A Gardening group, the Denby Dale Parish Countryside officer, and colleagues from the Denby Dale Centre/ Skelmanthorpe Community Pantry. The first meeting explored the group's experience, knowledge, and skills they'd like to share and identified goals for this year: getting to know the space with regular working days planned throughout the year, grow your own food community project.

Newsome Ward Community Forum

Our aims are to enable people who live and work in the Newsome Ward to come together, share information and support each other. To enable people to influence decision making in their own areas, and to be able to work together for the benefit of their communities. We do a wide range of things, including oversee the maintenance of Hey Green Community Wildlife Site, look after the community orchard in Lowerhouses, and look after the grounds of what was St John's Church in Newsome, which is being converted to Newsome Centre.

The mission of Thornton Lodge Action Group is: - to reduce inequality and disadvantage by addressing gaps in local services and working with partners to alleviate hardship in the local community - to give our clients a sense of belonging and encourage them to make a contribution to the community - to support local residents to develop their skills, confidence and self-esteem through education, training and employability activities with the broader aim of improving the education, health and economic welfare of the community and local community relations.

Holy Trinity Community Garden

On Thursday mornings we meet to care for our beautiful garden, improving it and growing veg. We’re also good at chatting and eating cake. We regularly run family sessions encouraging gyo and eco awareness.
