In 2010, after a campaign and petition, local people planted the first fruit trees on a small disused school playground owned by Kirklees Council, located at the bottom of Mountjoy Road, HD1 5PX. It is now identified as Community Green Space in the Kirklees Local Plan. The Friends of Highfields Community Orchard maintains the orchard as a space for nature and community use, and organises events to encourage local people to use it and to harvest the fruit and nuts that grow there. Our overall aim is to open up 2 areas within Honley Old Woods as bio diverse community areas, managing the ponds and surrounding land on an ongoing basis.
Activities to support these objectives include pond clearance and pond life surveying, pathway clearance, removal of invasive and to share with the community what can be found on their doorstep.

A group bringing together local residents and users of our woods to protect and improve the woodland in the Longley area, including Longley Wood Nature Reserve, Oakenbank, Ashenhurst, Martin Bank Woods, New Laith Scrog and Penny Spring Woods. We are eyes and ears, looking out for problems and reporting them and doing regular small scale litter picks and improvements. We want to encourage people to appreciate and protect the natural environment on our doorstep.

Welcome to the Friends of Norman Park. We are a voluntary group helping to take care of the park for the community and wildlife to enjoy.
We have regular work days in park, including litter picks, footpath clearing, gardening and maintaining facilities in the park.
We are currently working on improving the biodiversity and creating new wildlife habitats and gardens.
We also run sports, wellbeing, food, music, arts and crafts events for families throughout the year, including Bonkers for Conkers and Carols in the Park.
New volunteers and member are always welcomed.
