Scissett Community Garden
Location: Denby Dale (Denby Dale)
Date joined:
The long-term project is to develop an orchard, woodland walk, allotments and formal garden for reflection, on a 1000sqm plot (owned by St Augustine’s Church but worked independently by volunteers) in the village centre. The garden is sited between Scissett Academy and St Augustine’s Church.
We are currently nearing completion of the orchard, which we celebrated with a wassailing event in January, and are about to commence working on clearing the proposed allotment and garden sites.
We aim to be as sustainable as possible, recycling materials on site and we use no pesticides, in order to encourage pollinators and maintain a diversity of wildlife.

We always take the best approach for wildlife and biodiversity and engage experts where we can to ensure we are “doing the right thing”. We also work closely with the SCA and SEF within the village to agree work beforehand.

Skelmanthorpe Community Centre
Location: Denby Dale (Denby Dale)
Date joined: 10/03/2025
The community centre hosts all sorts of activities that aid the health and wellbeing of local residents. We are hoping to establish a small community allotment but this is still at the planning stage. However in response to feedback from residents through a place standard engagement exercise in conjunction with Kirklees Council we have started to organise community litter picks, and have secured ward funding to acquire the necessary equipment. Our membership of Natural Kirklees is intended initially to give insurance cover to residents choosing to join those litter picks and help improve the village environment, but we hope it will also extend to our development of the allotment.
